Living in or visiting Mexico City and looking to escape for a few days? Here are some of the best weekend getaways, each offering a unique mix of history, nature, and charm—all within a few hours' drive.
1. Valle de Bravo
A picturesque lakeside town surrounded by pine forests. Popular for paragliding, sailing, and hiking. Don’t miss the monarch butterfly sanctuary nearby during the winter months.
2. Tepoztlán
A mystical town known for its spiritual energy, artisan markets, and the hike to the pyramid of Tepozteco. Great for a wellness-focused getaway.
3. Puebla
A UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its colonial architecture, vibrant food scene (hello, mole poblano!), and Talavera pottery. It’s only about 2 hours from CDMX.
4. Querétaro
A clean, safe city with historical landmarks and excellent wine and cheese routes. It’s increasingly popular with expats and young families.
5. Cuernavaca
Nicknamed "The City of Eternal Spring," it offers lush gardens, Spanish-style haciendas, and a laid-back lifestyle ideal for a romantic weekend or spa retreat.
Each of these destinations is easily reachable by car or bus and offers a refreshing break from the bustle of Mexico City.
